Brief Team History

The Tackers played in the Mid-West Professional Basketball League during the league's existance from 1961-62 - 1963-64. The Tackers won the MWPBL championship in 1963-64. Other teams in the MWPBL were the Gary Whips, Chicago Bombers, Toledo Tartars, Dayton Mickeys, Battle Creek Warriors, Terre Haute, Pontiac Nationals, and Holland Oilers.

The MWPBL was replaced by the North American Basketball League and conducted seasons from 1964-65 - 1967-68. The Tackers won the NABL championships in 1964-65 and 1967-68. Other teams in the NABL were the Pontiac Tomahawks, Benton Harbor Twin City Sailors, Muskegon Panthers, Holland Carvers, Battle Creek Braves, Lansing Capitals, Columbus Comets, and Chicago Bombers. The NABL suffered and eventually disbanded once the new American Basketball Association was organized as a rival for the National Basketball Association in 1967-68.

In 1968-69, the Tackers played several exhibition games. Also, former Tacker Bob Wilkinson started another team called the Grand Rapids Shamrocks; however, I have no other information about that team.

During the 1970's, the Tackers played in the Continental Basketball Association. This CBA is not to be confused with the current day Continental Basketball Association which has operated since 1978-79.

The Tackers were a very popular team usually drawing over 3000 people to their games. Several of their games were "turn-away" games where all fans could not be admitted due to the limited size of the playing facility.
